Donna Jean Godchaux Band w/ Mark Karan
Special Guest Mookie Siegel

www.markakaran.com
www.donnajeangodchauxband.com

As the only woman officially billed as a member of the Grateful Dead, Donna Jean Godchaux held her own on-stage with the rest of the boys. However, her history as a singer isn't relegated to jam band history. Her backing vocals can be found on all kinds of records before and after her stint with the Dead. Godchaux started out as a session singer in Muscle Shoals, AL, then moved on to Memphis and Nashville and then finally to the West Coast. She worked with a group of backup singers (Jeannie Green and Ginger and Mary Holladay) who called themselves Southern Comfort and is credited as Donna Thatcher on Cher's 1969 release 3614 Jackson Highway, as well as on Elvis Presley's From Elvis in Memphis and Elvis Back in Memphis albums, among others. She moved to San Francisco, married Keith Godchaux, and spent the 1970s as a vocalist in the Grateful Dead as well as the Jerry Garcia Band. After life with the Dead, she and Keith created the Heart of Gold Band with drummer Greg Anton and guitarist Steve Kimock. Following various side trips, she resumed serious focus on her singing in the ‘90s, recording a new Heart of Gold Band album, At the Table, and singing with Phil & Friends and her own Donna Jean Band.

Mark Karan is best known for performing with the members of the Grateful Dead family. For the last twelve years, he has anchored the lead guitar slot in Bob Weir & RatDog. Before crossing over into the land of the Dead, Mark worked his guitar and vocal voodoo for the likes of Dave Mason, Delaney Bramlett, The Rembrandts, Paul Carrack, Huey Lewis, Jesse Colin Young and Sophie B. Hawkins. Mookie Siegel plays keyboard, accordion and vocals. Siegal has played with The David Nelson Band, Phil Lesh and Friends, Bob Weir’s RatDog. On bass is David MacKay who was an original member of The Heart of Gold Band. With this band you can expect to hear Grateful Dead favorites, classic rock and R&B tunes. Recent set lists of Donna Jean’s show have included “Franklin’s Tower,” “Cosmic Charlie,” “Sugaree,” “Ramble on Rose,” “Bertha,” and many other Grateful Dead favorites.

The Black Lillies www.theblacklillies.com
Born in the rumbling cab of a stone truck and aged in the oak of Tennessees smoky night haunts, The Black Lillies have quickly risen to the forefront of the Americana scene.
Founded by multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Cruz Contreras (co-founder of Robinella and the CCstringband), The Black Lillies have created their own unique brand of country, roots, rock and blues via Appalachia. In April 2009, The Black Lillies released Whiskey Angel, their debut recording, which was recorded live in Cruz’s living room. The album received rave reviews and appeared on multiple “Best of 2009ʺ lists across the country, winning the Independent Music Award for Best Album, Americana. The band’s current album,
100 Miles of Wreckage, has won multiple awards and spent more than five months on the Americana radio Top 40 charts – four of them in the top 20.

“The vocal interplay calls to mind the old-school exchanges of June Carter and Johnny Cash.”-- Matthew Everett, Metro Pulse

Country Joe McDonald
Centennial Tribute to Woody Guthrie

www.countryjoe.com
60’s era musical icon Country Joe McDonald is best known for his anti Vietnam War songs and his momentous Fish Cheer at Woodstock in 1969. But he also carries a deep relationship to the music of Woody Guthrie and his Oklahoma roots. Like Woody, Country Joe’s father was an Oklahoma cowboy. Guthrie’s music was all around when Joe grew up. Joe’s first tribute record to Woody was recorded in 1969 and at the Guthrie family’s request he has worked on some of Guthrie’s unfinished songs, putting music to Woody’s words. In 2001 Joe wrote and produced “A Tribute to Woody” for The Steinbeck Center and has been performing this tribute occasionally since, tonight with a nod to the recent centennial of Guthrie’s birth.

In a two-act, 90-minute presentation, Joe weaves together Guthrie's best-loved songs and some writings from Guthrie's autobiography, his novel and his Daily Worker newspaper column. "Like no one of his generation Country Joe McDonald carries on the mission of Woody Guthrie." --B I L L Y B R A G G

The Honeycutters—CD release show www.thehoneycutters.com
Asheville, North Carolina’s The Honeycutters are the musical collaboration of singer/songwriter Amanda Anne Platt and guitarist Peter James. Their sound has drawn comparisons to such artists as Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris or Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, with Platt and James producing a refreshingly unique blend of Americana music that is comfortingly familiar while being entirely original. Platt combines great songwriting talent, in which her songs are as catchy and heartbreaking as her melodies, with a voice that has been described as “perfectly unadorned” and “recklessly beautiful”. In both her simple composition and honest delivery it’s easy to hear the influence of country legends such as Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, or Loretta Lynn, while her songwriting carries a wit and an edge that plants her firmly in her generation. Guitarist James is considered one of western North Carolina’s most sought after guitar players, known for both insightful solos and tasteful accompaniment. The Honeycutters just released their second recording, When Bitter Met Sweet, a few months back. This follows their first recording of a couple years back Irene, which attracted a lot of attention around the country. Like so many of country music’s great duos, Platt and James have a musical chemistry that can be felt throughout the songs they play, from the sounds of their guitars to their vocal harmonies. The Honeycutters are touring as a five piece band with Tal Taylor on mandolin, Ian Harrod on bass, and Jon Ashley on drums backing up Platt and James.

featuring David and Linda LaFlamme

roadhogs.net/laflamme
It’s A Beautiful Day is most famous for their song "White Bird", a beautiful ballad that stood out not only for its memorable vocal melody and "seize the day" message, but also for front man David Laflamme's slow-burning violin solo. Multiple albums were laced with classic cuts such as "Hot Summer Day", "Bombay Calling," "Girl With No Eyes", "Wasted Union Blues", "Time Is", "Dolphins", "Misery Loves Company", and many more you'll remember. Today the band performs the music of It's A Beautiful Day along with newer material, moving effortlessly from an almost folksy sound to ethereal jazz to psychedelic to straight on rock & roll performing selections from three new CDs and over seven of their previous albums. The show is enhanced with David Laflamme's delightful reminiscing of the San Francisco Summer of Love Days and 40 plus years of performing. Nick Gravenites Band

www.nickgravenites.com
This evening we present one of the most important players of the 1960’s San Francisco rock and blues scene, Nick Gravenites. Nick grew up on the southside of Chicago hanging out in the mid-50's with a coterie of misfit white kids - Elvin Bishop, Paul Butterfield, Michael Bloomfield - who went on to form that protean powerhouse of watershed white blues, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Learning their lessons first-hand from the southside greats - Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Otis Rush - Gravenites & Co. burst open the seams of the scene with a feverish intensity and undeniable authenticity, redefining the blues with as much impact as the introduction of electric instrumentation had 15 years earlier. From the late 50's through the mid 60's, Gravenites gravitated between Chicago and San Francisco, establishing himself in the Bay "East West" for Butterfield. Gravenites scribed hits for Janis Joplin and has his songs recorded by Big Brother and the Holding Company, Michael Bloomfield, the Electric Flag (of which Gravenites was a founding member), Pure Prairie League, Tracy Nelson, Roy Buchanan, Jimmy Witherspoon as well as blues giants Howlin' Wolf, Otis Rush, and James Cotton.

Rory Block www.roryblock.com
With stunning versatility, Five time WC Handy Blues Music Award winner Rory Block performs intense Delta blues, passionate folk and gripping originals. Her triple combination of flawless, aggressive finger-picking, powerful enthralling vocals, and insightful and poignant songwriting has made her one of the most important performers in America today. When she digs into the old blues of Robert Johnson, Tommy Johnson, or Bessie Smith Block ranks as one of the most impressive and powerful to play that style. Her blues based originals show Block to be a contemporary blues songwriter with few peers to match her sensitivity as well as grittiness.
"Rory Block has been an inspiration to me since we started out years ago. Her guitar playing, singing and songwriting are some of the most soulful in traditional and modern blues."- Bonnie Raitt

"Her playing is perfect, her singing otherworldly as she wrestles with ghosts, shadows and legends."--The New York Times
