Michael Tarbox MySpace
Taking listeners to a place where country blues, Appalachian string band music and gospel come together in powerful and unexpected combinations, Michael Tarbox is a smokey-voiced singer with a pure backwoods style. He’s also a killer slide guitarist, and possesses an uncanny ability to make any song he plays sound new, as if it were somehow being sung for the first time. His band, The Tarbox Ramblers, has released two CDs on the Rounder label, toured with Robert Plant, and made a name for itself with a rough-hewn, direct sound that’s been praised by Rolling Stone, The New Yorker and NPR’s All Things Considered.

Tonight, in a special CD release show, Tarbox will play The Ramblers' music along with selections from his new solo album, "My Primitive Joy." The album's a gem, and we're eager to welcome Tarbox back to The Palms for what promises to be a great show.

Sapo Guapo www.sapoguapo.com
Sapo Guapo is a 10 piece Latin dance band based in Vacaville that has cultivated a sizeable following for its Afro-Cuban sound. The band has a large repertoire of familiar Latin dance music from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Columbia, Venezuela, Mexico and yes, New York. The band also plays several original songs composed by our co-founder, Juan Alejandro. While Salsa is featured, the band also performs other popular dance rhythms such as the Cha-Cha, Merengue, Cumbia and an occasional romantic Bolero. The energy created by the band won’t allow your audience/guests to sit still. Four members of the band have traveled to Cuba to study with famous Afro-Cubano performers. Other members have roots in “San Pancho” (San Francisco’s Mission District). The band also works with stunning Salsa dance instructor/ dancer, Angeline Lucia, on select engagements. Last season they had Grammy award winning horn players Julius Melendez and Abel Figueroa from Santana’s band playing on many of their gigs.

Dar Williams www.darwilliams.com
The Palms is very pleased to present pop folk singer songwriter Dar Williams. Williams has emerged over the years a most eloquent poet whose observations on the personal and the political are captured with a maturity not seen with most other artists. Her songs are not self analyses but rather astute and nuanced character studies of people, places, and societies. Over her career, Williams has released seven recordings, ranging from acoustic folk to more lushly arranged folk pop. She also recorded and toured with kindred souls Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell as part of their “Cry, Cry, Cry” Cd and tour. Early in her career after opening for Joan Baez, Baez took a liking to Williams’ work and has done tours and collaborated with her. .

"Dar Williams may be the best female singer/songwriter in America today." - Stereo-type

"A new generation of pop-folk enthusiasts lauds her as one of the genre's central figures." - Paste Magazine

"Williams has a beautiful singing voice, and most of the tunes, their poetic images and warm melodies effectively demonstrate her talents." - Associated Press

Steve Poltz   www.poltz.com
Steve Poltz is a Canadian-born American singer-songwriter and guitarist based in San Diego, California. He is a founding member of the indie-rock band The Rugburns and is best known for co-writing Jewel’s song "You Were Meant for Me". He appeared in the video, and has worked with Jewel on many occasions, such as tours, her platinum and diamond albums, and singles.

As a solo artist, he often performs acoustic-only "good old-fashioned sing-along" shows. His songs feature simple, poignant melodies and quirky, satirical lyrics.

“Poltz has the impish sense of humor that lands mouthy but harmless boys in Saturday detention and possibly not-so-harmless men in the relationship doghouse—after a slap, or a drink, in the face or two…”   --The Washington Times

Kinky Friedman www.kinkycigars.com
kinkyfriedman.com
Former Texas gubernatorial candidate, political commentator and self-proclaimed “author, columnist, musician and beautician, Kinky Friedman is performing on the West Coast this summer for the first time in nearly 20 years. Two members of Kinky's seminal band the Texas Jewboys, Little Jewford and Washington Ratso, will join him on the tour. No prisoners will be taken. Only the strong shall survive.

The Kinkster, often referred to as the “Mark Twain of Texas,” will also be hawking his wares, in this case his most recent (limited edition) books, Heroes of a Texas Childhood and What Would Kinky Do?, both of which will be available for purchase and signing at the shows. As Kinky has often said, he’ll “sign anything but bad legislation.” This includes any of his dozens of top-selling books or columns, or even his Kinky Friedman Cigars, which, rumor has it, will also be available at the venues. Bring it, and he will sign it. And now, for the first time in almost a generation, folks on the West Coast will get to hear Kinky perform (live!) tunes like “Ride ’Em Jewboy,” “Sold American” and “They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anymore.”

The Stone River Boys
featuring Dave Gonzalez and Mike Barfield
I See Hawks in LA
http://www.myspace.com/stoneriverboys

This evening we thrilled to present the great country funk of The Stone River Boys featuring Dave Gonzalez and Mike Barfield. After tearing it up in the Lone Star State and across the country for nearly two years, Austin’s Stone River Boys are celebrating their new recording called Love on the Dial. The Texas-based quintet features the talents of two well-traveled roots music practitioners — guitarist Dave Gonzalez, formerly a driving force in the Hacienda Brothers and the Paladins, and vocalist Mike Barfield, “The Tyrant of Texas Funk” and onetime leader of The Hollisters. Together, Barfield and Gonzalez have fashioned a gutsy crossbreed of country and R&B they’ve labeled “country funk” blending honky tonk, deep country, and roots rock with classic soul and funk. It’s a unique and thoroughly engrossing sound with Gonzalez’ perfect playing and lead singer Mike Barfield’s great singing and unique flair. Gonzalez and Barfield, are joined in the current edition of the Stone River Boys by bassist Scott Esbeck, pedal steel guitarist Gary Newcomb and drummer Mark Patterson, who all played in Austin singer-songwriter Bruce Robison’s group.

Playing first will be the fabulous LA based alt country band I See Hawks in LA. The Hawks are among the country’s finest bands that combine a traditional country sound with a dash or two or psychedilia all supporting some of the best songwriting going on. Lead singer and primary wordsmith for the band is Rob Waller, whose smart, incisive, and evocative songs have become favorites around here. Rounding out the band is Paul Lacques on guitar, Paul Marshall on bass, and drummer Shawn Nourse.

Starting in 1974, the group recorded over twenty albums and constantly toured the U.S., Europe, Canada and Japan. Jimmy was the heart, soul, and adrenaline of the Nighthawks sound during his fourteen year tenure with the Washington, D.C.-based band, creating a distinctively raw, powerful guitar style and establishing a reputation as a spectacular soloist. Eliza Gilkyson  http://www.elizagilkyson.com

The shows over the past couple years here with Austin’s Eliza Gilkyson have been some of the most beautiful and rich performances we’ve had in recent memory. Her voice, a rare combination of beautiful vulnerability and worldly experience, is perfection. Her songs address things both personal and political and she writes them with a real poet’s touch.

“An exquisite weaver of story-songs that strike at the heart of personal experience . . .” - No Depression Magazine

"The title "artist" is bestowed on anyone who makes a recording, but in Gilkyson's case it truly applies. " … poetic, honest..." - St Louis Post Dispatch

“Masterfully structured, startlingly intimate songs in a beautifully lived in voice . . .” - Boston Globe .
