music, singing with a rare combination of soulfulness and sensuality -- a blend

Legendary harp player Norton Buffalo returns to The
Palms with his 5 piece acoustic band. This great band includes David Aguilar on
guitar, Lisa Flores-Buffalo on vocals/guitar, David Brown on bass, and Owen
Davis on congas/percussion. Norton, of course, is widely considered the finest
multi-genre harmonica player of our time. He’s been a highly celebrated member
of the Steve Miller Band, recorded and toured with some of the top names in
music, worked in movies and television, as well as performing with his own band,
the Knockouts. Buffalo has also been highly sought after as a recording artist,
having played on over 100 albums by artists as diverse as Bonnie Raitt (he did
that searing harmonica solo on "Runaway"), Kenny Loggins, The Doobie Brothers
(including the Grammy Award-winning "Minute By Minute"), The Marshall Tucker
Band, Johnny Cash, David Grisman, Juice Newton, Laurie Lewis and Elvin Bishop.
Norton has for years joined together and performed with various San Francisco
area folk, country and roots music talents, while expanding and improving his
acoustic repertoire. Over the past three years he has fine-tuned this show and
has now joined together with these wonderful new musicians to bring it to the
public. This show features mostly new songs, along with new arrangements of a
few of his older favorites, that together represent some of Buffalo’s best
lyrical and melodic songwriting. With Norton and Friends you can expect to hear
Norton’s smooth and soulful vocals, lots of wonderful harmonies and of course a
full dose of Norton’s trademark, awe inspiring harmonica. Their music covers
many styles, including, folk, story telling songs, gorgeous ballads, Latin
sambas, reggae, R&B, a bit of blues, a little bluegrass, a taste of country, and
through it all, the best harmonica playing you will ever hear, bar none.

David Lindley

Unfortunately,
we are having to cancel our July 3 show with David Lindley, due to illness. We
have rescheduled for Thursday, August 13 at 8pm. If you bought advance tickets
you can use them for the August 13 date or you can get a refund at the place of
purchase. Of course, we are very sorry for the inconvenience and disappointment
if you were planning on coming to this show. If you have any further questions
email us a palms@yolo.com
David Lindley is one the world’s great musical
treasures, one of the most accomplished and entertaining players of "all
instruments stringed" in the world. From the mundane (guitar) to the exotic
(African, Middle Eastern acoustic instruments) he seems to have mastered them
all. Lindley’s accomplished history dates back to the late 60's when he formed
his first notable band, Kaleidoscope, which some have called the first “world
music” rock band. Afterwards Lindley became Jackson Browne's most significant
accompanist, playing lead guitar on most of those classic 70's Browne
recordings. Also during this time Lindley struck a close relationship with Ry
Cooder, working with him on "Bop til You Drop" and "The Long Riders Soundtrack".
It was in the early 80's that Lindley formed his own remarkable band El Rayo-X,
which integrated American roots music with world music and a heavy reggae
influence. By the late 80's Lindley fascination with and mastery of world music
was full steam ahead as he traveled to Madagascar with Henry Kaiser and recorded
and played with some of the area's greatest players.

Rita
Hosking & Cousin Jack |
www.ritahosking.com
|
|
Local singer and songwriter Rita Hosking is making
waves big time with her haunting and compelling original bluegrass and western
mountain music. She has just released her third CD, Come Sunrise, a collection
of 11 original songs recorded in Austin, Texas with producer and guitarist Rich
Brotherton (Robert Earl Keen, Caroline Herring,). This new recording launches
Rita onto the national Americana scene. This evening Rita celebrates this new
CD, performing as her quartet, Rita Hosking and Cousin Jack. This group features
Rita on guitar, Sean Feder on banjo, Andy Lentz on fiddle, and Bill Dakon on
bass and guitar.
Rita’s music has roots to the great bluegrass and
mountain music traditions of America’s south, but Rita writes of her roots
growing up in the hills and mountains of the West, rural Shasta County. Her
songs are sprinkled with characters and images of the mountains and the rural
west, “kitchen tables, springs, loss, miners, mountains, culture clash, stray
dogs, hope, forest fires.” Her delivery is, to put it simply, intense. "From the
first time I heard Rita sing, her voice gripped me and did not let go," (Joe
Craven.) That voice, called a "soulful howl from the mountains" (California
Bluegrass Association), "This California girl comes by her mountain-music
sensibility with true authenticity, with original songs deeply rooted in her
family's frontier experience," (Dan Ruby, FestivalPreview.com.) Rita's songs
have been lauded for story and sense of place, and her performances praised for
capturing the audience. Honors include winner of the '08 Dave Carter Memorial
Songwriting Contest at the Sisters Folk Festival, alternate finalist #1 for the
'09 Telluride Troubadour Contest, and others as well. She has played her songs
for appreciative listeners at the Strawberry Music Festival, Kate Wolf Music
Festival, and many more. Rita points out that she likes to "get to the heart of
the matter." As with a mystic, this means a loaded and stunning, yet gentle and
compassionate delivery.

Anders
Osborne's Myspace |
|
This evening features three
performers who have roots in the music of New Orleans. Anders
Osborne has been working and living as a professional songwriter
out of New Orleans since 1985. Osborne's songs have been
recorded by artists such as Tim McGraw, Keb' Mo', Dr. John, Tab
Benoit, Double Trouble, and many others. Anders and his band
toured the U.S. during these years and in 1995, at which point
he was signed to Okeh Records and released the critically
acclaimed album entitled "Which Way to Here". The record became
Osborne’s first commercial break with two top-five singles,
Favorite Sonˇ and Pleasin’ You. Both were featured in several
Hollywood movies, and the latter was later recorded by Jonny
Lang. Soon after, Anders songs appeared Keb' Mo's Gold selling
1998 "Slow Down" album which acheived Gold status and later won
a Grammy award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. The album
featured two songs co-written with Osborne for which he received
a Grammy.
Clarence Bucaro is a remarkably
genuine and expressive young artist who seamlessly intertwines
the introspective singer/songwriter tradition of Jackson Browne,
Joni Mitchell and the acoustic Neil Young with the silky soul of
Curtis Mayfield and pre-What’s Goin’ On Marvin Gaye. The New
York Times compared Bucaro’s sound to “late-1960s Van Morrison.”
His new CD, ‘Til Spring, produced by Tom Schick, who also
produced Nora Jones, Ryan Adams, and Rufus Wainwright.
Johnny Sansone is a veteran
bluesman playing in the Chicago style who has settled in New
Orleans. Playing harmonica, Sansone recalls Chicago blues giants
Big Walter and Little Walter, and as the frontman in Ronnie
Earl’s band backed blues legends Jimmy Rogers, Robert Jr.
Lockwood, Humbert Sumliin and Pinetop Perkins. "Sansone's
accordion work is engaging [and] his harmonica playing is
downright dazzling . . . but his ace in the hole is his
songwriting . . .Jumpin' Johnny Sansone may be one of the blues
best-kept secrets, but talent like his wins fans for life."

Sia Amma
“In Search of My Clitoris”
A Fundraiser for “Global Women Intact”
|

This evening is a follow up
performance to last year’s sold out show here with Sia Amma-the
African born and Bay Area based comedienne/actor/performance
artist whose engaging one woman show “In Search of My Clitoris,”
addresses the controversial subject of the practice of female
circumcision in Africa. This evening Sia tells of her experience
this past year in Liberia, and her efforts there in trying to
eradicate the practice. Her show is a clever combination of
stand-up comedy and theater that is funny, playful and wise. An
extraordinary poet, playwright and comedian, Sia Amma has
courageously and hilariously devised a comedy act to empower and
educate the general public on female circumcision. Originally
from Liberia, Amma survived the coming of age ritual of female
circumcision at nine years old. On a search for her most
precious possession, during her show we are led into a collage
of characters and culture, blending music, dance and tradition.
Listen to her story and the stories of other women and rejoice
in the dance. Through her discoveries, you may find yourself
becoming a part of her endeavor to celebrate.
"While female circumcision is
no laughing matter in itself, Sia Amma finds an improbable
amount of humor as she dishes up her life story with impeccable
comic timing."

Stan Ridgeway
|
www.stanridgway.com |
|
Stan Ridgway is a true original. One of the most
unique singer/songwriters in American music, from his early days with L.A.'s
Wall Of Voodoo, to his even more intriguing solo career, Ridgway has created an
impressive body of work.
"Music is more than just chords and notes to me,
it has the ability to make pictures in the mind," says noir troubadour and sound
alchemist Stan Ridgway. "My records are designed to be seen as well as heard."
A mad scientist of sound and vision, Ridgway
possesses a style unparalleled, at least in our known universe. Making his
musical pictures for 30 years now, the singer-songwriter and guitarist has
emerged as a singular voice in contemporary song.
"It’s a hybrid of all the music I’ve loved and
admired," he says. "There are no boundaries on art and no rules to follow in
music. A song is really just a strong point of view."
Ridgway works in his own unique form of aural
tradition, chronicling all that lies beneath the safe and sane surface. He
craftily sets his dark materials to off-kilter and eerie melodies that echo the
uneasy action of a cast of characters on the brink. His tales often take place
in the microcosmic miasma of L.A. and its outer desert, where his creations try
to wrest meaning from the beautiful catastrophe of their lives. The combination
makes for a stunning stew of universal provocations.
"Some know him just as the long lost singer
with the great Wall Of Voodoo, others as one of the great unsung maverick
geniuses of our time." - MELODY MAKER
"For Stan Ridgway life is like an old
detective movie, full of furtive con men and tough dames who hide their daily
crimes in the gray mist of the city. This is mature music, short on
sentimentality, long on imagination and style." - PEOPLE MAGAZINE
