James McMurtry & the Heartless Bastards

www.jamesmcmurtry.com
Over the past decade and a half Austin, Texas’ James McMurtry has put out the best roots rockin’ serious songwriting recordings you can find. His character studies and astute observations of the American social landscape are as good as you’ll find anywhere in music .The Texas native long has been known as an astute, clear-eyed observer and concise, no-holds-barred chronicler of the human condition, but a growing socio-political edge fairly exploded just prior to the 2004 elections when his scathing, palace-rattling “We Can’t Make It Here”, a seven-plus-minute diatribe against social injustice and the Administration’s hypocrisy and deceptions was made available online as a free download. He’s also one of the great roots-rock tunesmiths today, writing wholly listenable songs that only get better with repeated listening. Oh did we mention his stunning electric guitar playing too? He does that great too…. Check him out.

Marcia Ball

marciaball.com
“Long tall Marcia Ball”-The hottest blues, rhythm and blues, funky piano player this side of Professor Longhair himself. A Louisiana native who has lived in Austin, Texas for several years, blues singer and pianist Marcia Ball plays a knock-down honky-tonk style of piano that blends the orneriness of blues with the sweet rolling rhythms of New Orleans R&B.

The simple mention of a Louisiana or Texas roadhouse conjures up images of a crowded dancehall filled wall-to-wall with rabid music fans rocking to a hotter-than-hot band playing a smoldering blend of swampy R&B, jumping blues and heart-wrenching ballads. Pianist/vocalist/songwriter Ball brings that spirit to every concert she plays and every song she records. Her music is mixed with equal parts simmering soul fervor and two-fisted piano pounding. Between her deeply emotive vocals and her incisive, often poignant songwriting, Ball is in a class by herself. Her groove-laden New Orleans R&B and driving Gulf Coast blues have made her a one-of-a-kind favorite of music fans all over the world. The Boston Herald says, “Piano pounding Marcia Ball plays masterful, red hot tracks from the Texas-Louisiana border. Her voice can break your heart with a ballad or break your back with a rocker.” The Austin Chronicle heralds her as “a class act whose soulful, horn-laden swamp pop and murderous honky-tonk make her a stellar example of musical artistry.” She is also a splendid singer, with a husky, sultry vocal attack at once biting and seductive. Like Bonnie Raitt, she moves easily and convincingly between rousing rockers and emotive ballads.”

What should have been a celebration of the newly completed Hacienda Brothers recording, ARIZONA MOTEL, turned sadly into singer songwriter roots music master Chris Gaffney’s last recording. With the passing of Gaffney from aggressive liver cancer just after the completion of the new cd, has come an outpouring of affection for Gaffney as a person and a musician as well as the bitter disappointment at the loss of a friend and the loss of one its roots music’s truest guiding lights. This evening Gaffney’s partner in the Hacienda Brothers Dave Gonzalez brings special guests to pay tribute to Chris as well as put out there the songs that he, Chris, and the other Hacienda Brothers members worked so hard to put together.

From The Hacienda Bros website: “Dave Gonzalez of the Hacienda Brothers will be touring this summer to celebrate the life of his friend and musical partner Chris Gaffney. The touring will be difficult yet cathartic for Gonzalez. There hasn't been a tour in the past six years, since his days in the Paladins, that Gaffney hasn't been there right by his side. Yet there is no better way to honor the memory of Chris then to go out and play to the audience that loved him so. This will be a chance for all of Chris’ friends and fans to gather and pay tribute to one of the greatest American music performers in the past 20 years. Gonzalez will also be out supporting the release of the last studio album from the Hacienda Brothers titled Arizona Motel. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to helpgaff.com to aid the family of Chris Gaffney.” Opening the show will be SF country band Red Meat, a great band who was also a longtime friend of Gaffney’s. Expect a special guest or two this evening.

The Iguanas, now out of Austin by way of New Orleans, is considered one of the country's most exciting roots-music dance bands. The sound of The Iguanas is diverse, combining the best of New Orleans and Tex-Mex, ranging from rock, blues, country, bayou, and soul to conjunto, norteno, and cumbia, singing songs in both English and Spanish. As a five piece band, The Iguanas instrumentation is tenor sax, bajo-sexto (Mexican rhythm guitar), guitar, accordion, bass, and drums. "A technicolor bright band that can segue effortlessly from Louisiana rhythm and blues to Tex-Mex, conjunto, good time country rock to sensuous samba or accordion pumped polkas!- Philadelphia Daily News

www.shupe.net
Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand brings high energy, great playing skills and an eclectic palate as this acoustic five piece mixes it up with elements of bluegrass, jazz, country, rock, funk, latin, ska, and blues. RubberBand is a perfect name for Ryan Shupe and his band of amazing musicians. The group is known for its ability to stretch out musically in all directions, pinging back and forth with a joyful spontaneity most bands could barely imagine, let alone achieve. A descendent from a long line of fiddle players, (he’s the fifth generation to play,) Shupe has been playing violin nearly as long as he could walk. Joining Shupe as the RubberBand is banjoist Craig Miner on a ukulele, banjo, guitar, mandolin, and bouzouki, Roger Archibald on guitar, Ryan Tilby on bass, and Bart Olson on drums

Tribute to U. Utah Phillips
 w/Brendan Phillips’ “Fast Rattler”
Lee Bob Watson-opening

www.myspace.com/fastrattler www.myspace.com/leebobmusic
The recent passing of U. Utah Phillips was a sobering moment for all of us here at The Palms. It is well known that it was a Utah performance that was the very first Palms show over 32 years ago. And we purposely chose Utah to be that last performer at the barn location in 2002 when that closed. His history with us is huge, and his influence within folk music and beyond will resonate for a very long time. He was mightily loved, hugely respected as a performer, a thinker, and a doer, he lived so many of the ideals that many of us hope to live, and….he put on a great show.

This evening, Utah’s son Brendan Philips brings his band Fast Rattler to celebrate the music of U. Utah Phillips

“I’ll flag a fast rattler and ride it on down BOYS! They’re runnin’ the bums out of town.” This line taken from Utah’s song “Larimer Street” is where Fast Rattler got its name. Led by Utah’s son, Brendan, Fast Rattler is comprised of a varying cast of musicians from the Olympia, WA - Portland, OR area. The emphasis of the band is to play from Utah’s expansive catalog of songs and they’ve shared the stage with Utah a number of times.

For fans of Utah this evening will be a chance to hear his music and celebrate his work. Only a few times a year will Fast Rattler come together to sing and play these songs and share them with all the folks who have come to love Utah’s songs over the years. Don’t miss this train! Come on out for an evening with Fast Rattler!

Lee Bob Watson will be joining in the celebration on these special evenings, backed by Fast Rattler and some other friends and family

Blame Sally
Corinne West

www.blamesally.com www.corinnewest.com

This evening showcase two terrific Americana/folk acts from Northern California-Blame Sally and Corrine West. San Francisco’s Blame Sally are four Bay Area women Renee Harcourt, Monica Pasqual, Jeri Jones, and Pam Delgado, whose talents as musicians, songwriters, and singers is making Blame Sally one of the West Coast’s top acoustic acts. Their most recent cd Severland carves out a strong identity on the indie-pop edges of Americana. Their music, which has been described as emotionally charged, passionate, highly melodic and compelling, has been played on radio stations around the country. Neil Young's Living With War website features the BLAME SALLY music video "If You Tell a Lie" at #2, while San Francisco's KFOG selected tracks from both previous Blame Sally CDs to appear on its 2003 and 2004 compilations alongside tracks by Paul Simon, Spearhead, Jackie Greene, The Waifs, Dar Williams, and more.

"...Blame Sally weaves lush guitars and vivid vocals through touching and introspective songs. Think a sultry post-modern Joni Mitchell meets Indigo Girls. “-DJ Pusspuss, The Spectrum, June 2004

Singer songwriter Corrine West writes emotionally powerful songs accompanied by stellar musicianship, expressive vocals, and songs that pierce to the core and sooth the soul. Throughout, the most dynamic instrument is West's highly emotive voice. At turns subtle and sophisticated, unbridled and passionate, it captures and conveys both the fragility and strength of the human spirit and translates the mysteries of the heart into something tangible.

Janis Ian www.janisian.com
One of the most prominent, respected, and important songwriters over the past three and a half decades is Janis Ian. It was at the unbelievably young age of 15 that Ian wowed the nation with her controversial saga of interracial love “Society’s Child.” Self penned and arranged this song topped the charts and created a storm of discussion at the national level. Her debut album in 1967 earned her nine Grammy nominations. Since then Ian has recorded 17 albums and hundreds of songs including “Jesse,” made a pop standard by Roberta Flack. Ian continues recording, recently earning a Grammy nomination for Contemporary Folk Album of the Year and a Country Music Award for Pop Album of the Year. In addition to her permanent place as a heavyweight songwriter Ian is also an extremely gifted guitarist.

Sal Valentino

Artist Website
Sal Valentino is truly a living legend. Famed lead singer of 60’s pop/rock hitmakers The Beau Brummels and manic front man for the 70’s psychedelic-funk-rock-full-stage-extravaganza, Stoneground, Sal latest release is his first major-label release in almost 40 years, “Every Now And Then” features the title song penned by long-time music collaborator and national recording artist, Jackie Greene. “Every Now And Then” features Sal doing what he does best, interpreting songs and stories that can only be delivered (by what has been referred to by rock historians, as) “the most underrated voice in Rock and Roll history. As a nod to the past, Valentino covers The Beau Brummels biggest hit “Laugh, Laugh” evoking memories of the innocence of early 60’s rock and roll without the slightest bit of regret that time has moved on. “Every Now And Then” is a musical road map of life featuring heart-wrenching songs like Greene’s title tune, to the jangly rock guitar-drenched “What The World Needs” to the bouncy duet with Chris Webster, “Just Like You”. “Every Now And Then” is a new piece of history, a road map of the long and twisted back-roads of rock that lead us to today. Sacramento’s Walking Spanish will open the show.
